Third Base — Caspar Howard

Howard looked as good as those guys from the Winter Olympics.

I waited for Kristy to fire away at our third baseman with both barrels. He was a wimp, and a sissy, and a ballerina, and a loser, and in a million years no guy from New York would behave like this. Instead, she said, "Do you realize what a great athlete you have to be to do what he's doing?"

On cue, Caspar executed a triple jump that blew me away. "He's fantastic!" I enthused. "Let's go congratulate him!"

She looked at me pityingly. "It's five a.m. — do you know where your brain is? If we show up now, he'll see we've been spying on him, and he'll never trust us again. And then the Tigers lose all that energy that could be channeled toward baseball."

"Toward baseball?'' 1 repeated. "I'm not putting down skating, but it's got nothing to do with baseball. Caspar doesn't even like baseball. He's only on the team to please his dad."

"An athlete is an athlete," lectured Kristy the great sports expert. "If he can do that" — she indicated the rink — "he Ccin play baseball. He just has to want it."

"He'll say no." I told her.

"I'm not planning to ask.''
